A small theory on Breathing Apparatus

There are four types of Breathing Apparatus and they are as follows by giving numbers:
  1. ICABA stands for International compressed air breathing apparatus
  2. SCBA stands for Self contained Breathing Apparatus
  3. ELSA stands for Emergency Life Saving Appliances
  4. EEBD stands for Emergency Escape Breathing Device

SCBA is the one that is commonly used. No matter, what type of BA’s are there but the purpose is same. The main objective of the equipment is to supply fresh air to the wearer on demand i.e. where he/she is fighting with fires. Fulfilling the purpose is the necessarily for saving fire and property. The main function is to provide sufficient fresh air to the wearer on demand. Again, demand means when he/she i.e. the fire fighter is fighting fire. Its other function is to prevent the inhalation of toxic, poisonous gases and smoke.

Before using the BA, it should be tested. The main parts of BA are gauge test i.e. meter that test the pressure of oxygen in the cylinder and it should not be less that 150 bar. Warning whistle test can also be done, by the way it’s automatic. If the pressure is low, the warning whistle will give a whistle. But the above two tests are enough. Weights of BA is normally 19 Kgs but is also depends on the company like Centurion weighs 19 Kgs, Bridgade weighs 18 Kgs and Drager weighs 16.5 Kgs. Among these BA’s Centurion is widely used due to its automatic system, self contained air, positive pressure, by pass valve and many more automatic parts.
